Our History

The Maison Gisèle Pomerleau, Born of a Real Need in the Community

Maison Gisèle Pomerleau was born out of a pressing need for shelter and support for women victims of violence, more specifically domestic violence. It is a 2nd-stage shelter that enables abused women and their children to rebuild their lives in a safe, confidential environment.

Supported by the Centre des femmes de Montréal-Est/Pointe-aux-Trembles, the Maison Gisèle Pomerleau is the brainchild of two women, Dorette Mekamdjio and Gisèle Pomerleau, who have worked tirelessly to bring this project to fruition.

From Groundbreaking to Grand Opening

Work officially began in November 2022, and it was with immense pride that the Maison Gisèle Pomerleau was inaugurated in February 2024. We were thus able to provide 20 homes for women in need, a moment of great joy and satisfaction for the whole team.

The Legacy of Gisèle Pomerleau

The name of the shelter pays tribute to the founder of the Women’s Centre of Montréal-Est/Pointe-aux-Trembles, a woman who dedicated a large part of her life to defending women’s rights. For us, it was only natural that this project bear her name, in recognition of her commitment to the community and her involvement.

Born in Gaspésie and raised in Montreal, Gisèle Pomerleau developed a profound altruism and a burning desire to defend women. A woman of character, determined to fight injustice and inequality, she devoted her life to this cause, until her death in December 2021. However, Gisèle had the opportunity to see the first steps of the project that already bore her name.
